During today’s keynote address at Google IO the next variant of the Android operating system was announced. Ice Cream Sandwich will be the OS that brings the phone and tablet OS’s back together for a much improved system. The major focus of ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich, it’s easier to type three letter, lol) will be all about choices for the end user. All of the new and exciting things we have seen in Honeycomb will be brought over to the phone OS, and of course all the good stuff of the phone side will continue to grow.
Google is aiming for a Q4 release for ICS, but we all know that things can change, and I am sure that we will see some leaked roms leading up to an official release. There will ne new API’s added to the framework to help scale things across all form factors, and will also add to a state of the art UI. Google also made sure that they explicitly stated that ICS would be all open source, mainly due to the bad press they have taken for Honeycomb I am sure.
We will hopefully start to get some more information on ICS in the months to come, or maybe even weeks or hours if we are truly lucky!
