During an event in Tokyo held by Google, the Google Mobile Revolution, Eric Schmidt was the key speaker and he took the time to openly address the lawsuits and patent infringements that have fallen upon manufacturers like HTC. Schmidt put the emphasis on the outstanding growth of the Android platform as the reasons behind these lawsuits, stating that they are “inspired by our success”. Schmidt did not stop there as he also flat out said that Google is not worried in the least about these patent wars that are front and center at the moment.
“We have seen an explosion of Android devices entering the market and, because of our successes, competitors are responding with lawsuits as they cannot respond through innovations. I’m not too worried about this.”
Schmidt also discussed that he thinks Android will become the most popular smartphone platform in Asia due to the increase in manufacturers driving down the device price, and not to mention the booming population growth.
“Every month, China and India are adding 10 million mobile subscribers and we expect to see amazing growth in markets with lower penetration rates such as Indonesia and the Philippines.”
Schmidt was even asked about whether or not Google would help out HTC in their current battle with Apple, even by helping with legal costs, especially since HTC is seeing record sale san profit numbers on the Android side of things. To this Schmidt replied with a very brief, yet definitive answer, “We will make sure they don’t lose, then.”. It is still yet to be seen as to how exactly Google is going to help out it’s Android OEM’s when it comes to legal battles with Apple and Microsoft, but from what Schmidt is touting, Google does not plan on letting the enemy win.
