Review: Qmadix Boostpac Eclipse

As a cell phone power user I always find my battery not lasting as long as I would like it to.  Solution – extended battery.  There is a great advantage to having an extended battery; obviously the added life to your phone and you have an additional battery since you had to buy the extended one.  There is also a downfall to this; if you have a non-removable battery, you don’t get the option of the extended battery purchase.  Hit the break for the full in-depth review of this battery pack.

The other downfall is having a phone doubled in sized by a huge battery and trying to find a case, holster or clip that will fit it.  What do you do?  Sacrifice one for the other?  Buy a second stock battery?  We have the answer right here.  Qmadix, the leader in high-tech gadgets and accessories.  Our good friends sent us some samples of their remarkable products to do a review and we were more than happy to oblige.

2 Batteries or Not 2 Batteries…that is the question.

Having a second battery is always a good idea.  The problem with that is the fact that you usually only have one place, your own phone, to charge it.  This tends to be a problem when you want 2 full batteries.  With my phone, it’s rooted, over clocked to 1.7GHz and a custom ROM.  Along with that are the standard apps, 5 e-mail addresses, and standard set of IM apps; needless to say my battery life is that of a fruit fly.  I looked at a few extended batteries and there is nothing that appealed to my liking.

That’s when I saw Qmadix eclipse Boostpac; a wonderful little box with amazing potential to make my life easier.

So let’s take an in-depth dive into this product.

Virtually every detail is accounted for in the Boostpac Eclipse.  The picture on their website really doesn’t do it justice.  When I saw it I was expecting to receive a good sized block.  I was pleasantly surprised with the size and weight of it.  Its super light weight and compact.  It easily fits into that 3rd pocket in a pair of jeans.  With the dimensions of 2.7”x2”x.9” it’s smaller than a tin of mints and weighing in at only a few ounces it’s not like your carrying a brick on your trousers.

Unlike some external battery packs that have a red and green LED for strength remaining the Boostpac Eclipse has a total of 8 blue LED’s (4 on each side) which light up and/or blink together on both sides.  Granted I would like to see a digital meter with the strength, however, it beats the pants off of the standard green/red LED.

When I plugged it in the blue lights instantly lit up showing the amount of charge it had already in it from the factory.  Yes, it comes with a bit of juice so you can be back up and running as soon as you get it.  When it is plugged in the LED blinks while charging and is solid when that “percentage is charged”.  Example 0-25% Blinking, 26%-50% 1 solid and 1 blinking, then 2 solid and 1 blinking etc.  Each LED signifies ¼ of the charge.  It charges via USB 2.0 with the included USB cable.  I would like to see it come with a 120v household plug in addition incase your not near a USB port.  On either side of the unit is a port.  1 side is a micro-USB for charging the unit and the other side is a standard USB for discharging into the phone.  This is a great feature because the ports don’t have the physical ability to be confused and accidently plugging in the wrong side AND you only need the one cable; just flip it over to go from charging to using.

This product is a dual use pack.  It has the standard USB for most newer devices and it acts as a dock for your Apple products.  Currently the device can only charge one item at a time.  Personally I would like to see it be able to charge an i-something via the dock and a USB equipped at the same time.  Maybe in a revision or later models this will be a possibility.

At 1500 mAh this is the same as the battery I have in my phone now so it’s not an extended life battery, however, it does extend the life of your battery by charging it while it’s plugged into your phone. Do the math… 1500 stock battery + 1500 Boostpac Eclipse = 3000mAh.  Most extended batteries are in the range of 2100mAh to 3000mAh with some companies going crazy with a 3800mAh.  Battery technology is changing rapidly.  Here is what I did:  Charged up my phone and the pack at the same time, once my phone got to about 2% I plugged in the battery pack and let it charge my phone, once the phone was charged I simply plugged in the Boostpac Eclipse and let it recharge again for another use.  The Boostpac Eclipse charges your phone rather than using the Boostpac Eclipse as a battery.  This is great as once your Boostpac Eclipse is depleted your phone battery is fully charged so you don’t have 2 dead batteries like other extended or external packs.

Whether it’s an Android, BlackBerry or Apple it has set amperage to how much charge the battery can handle during the charging process.  This is actually an over-looked aspect by many.  See, when the battery is charged at higher amperage than designed to handle the battery gets hot.  If you live in Florida like I do, or even in the southern states, you know heat will ruin a battery faster than anything.  When you charge a battery with the amperage being to high it heats up.  This battery pack will only charge your phone at the designated amperage for this reason.  Another great feature is Smart Technology to avoid over charging, once your phone is charged the unit shuts off.

Let’s bring it to the jury.

Overall I am very impressed by this unit.  I am certainly glad I have it.  If it were up to me I would add the digital battery meter, ability to charge 2+ items at one time (while plugged in) and I would love to see it have higher than 1500mAh capacity.  While 1500mAh isn’t bad, the always lit LEDs take from that which takes away from the purpose of the battery.  Even if they had a button that flashes the charge level it would be good.

If you would like to have one of these Boostpac Eclipse Auxiliary batteries you can get it from www.Qmadix.com for $59.99.  As a tech guru I highly recommend it from personal experience.
