Editorial: Is Samsung innovative or just riding coat tails?

editorial

It’s been all over the web, all over the news and all over the face of the planet.  Apple is consistently suing Samsung for patent this or that (and winning).  It begs to ask the question “Is Samsung innovative or just riding coat tails?”  We all know the Apple brand, we see the fan boys arriving in droves to the newest and greatest release.  While I am an Android Nerd and have been for over a year – after leaving BlackBerry for a superior product – I can’t help but wonder what is Samsung thinking?

Hit the break for the rest of the story…

New ideas come out daily.  Samsung pushes out a new product what seems like every other week and yet each one is (of its powerhouses) hit with a new lawsuit. Apple’s iPhone has proven itself in the world of smartphones.  It is sleek, stunning, and powerful and has a beautiful IU; it has everything one could want in a cool phone (except the whole open-source thing).  It is feasible that Samsung is trying to make the look of their products as close to that as possible and they have done it.  They made it SO close that it’s indistinguishable by its own counsel from a limited distance as proven 2 separate times in federal courts.

Samsung is a forced to be reckoned with especially with the geographical area they cover.  So why not go for something different? Something innovative?  Something NOT Apple.  Samsung has a plethora of phones to back them each one with something new to bring to the table from entry-level to the Gnex.  Why copy?  Obviously if the lawsuits are happening all over the planet and being won there is something to be said.

Samsung is a global leader.  Apple is a global leader.  At this point I am not sure what Samsung is thinking.  What happens when they get the bill for all the lawsuits?  The damages will be in the high 7-9 figure area for the damage caused.  Be a leader or bow out.  If you’re just going to copy then don’t put Android on your products get a license with Apple and avoid the impending lay-offs you will cause from the amount of money you’re foolishly blowing to be what you’re not.

It would seem that Samsung is caring more about it sales than the people it employs; I for one find that disgusting (if that is the case).  Look around Samsung…you have a world of people that turn to you for the latest and greatest devices and operating systems and features and much more.  If we wanted Apple we would get one.  We don’t want Sample….we want Samsung.  We want innovation.  We want you to get your head out of the sand (keeping it G-rated) and make the latest and greatest.

For now we will just have to see what Samsung’s redesigned items look like, until then Sample may be just what it is, a copycat of another global leader.  Maybe Samsung has what it takes to make the phones of the next century or maybe they will just continue to ride the coat tails of the innovators and see which courtroom they land in next.
